We keep it low cost and broadly diversified.

We seek to create and manage investment portfolios that maximize the likelihood you can achieve your goals. Everyone’s goals and comfort with risk are unique, so virtually every client has a different investment mix. We rebalance your investments regularly to align with your plan, and we adjust them if your goals change. Regardless of your goals or investment horizon, it’s almost always best to minimize fees and diversify broadly.

Estate Planning

Protect your family and your legacy.

Working with your attorney, we help you create an appropriate estate plan. An estate plan sets out who will receive your financial and personal possessions when you die, and it names one or more people to execute those intentions after your death. Your plan also names relatives or friends to assist you with financial and health decisions if you are incapacitated.

An estate plan achieves multiple objectives: protecting your spouse, children or others who depend on you; minimizing likely estate tax after you die; clarifying who gets what, and when, after your death; naming a custodian for underage children; and setting out what care you want in your final days of life.

Tax Planning

Forward-looking and lifelong tax strategies.

We help you identify strategies to minimize your projected lifetime tax bill and the tax bill you leave to your heirs. No one can perfectly forecast their income or tax policy over the balance of their life. But you can adopt strategies that increase your chances of success.

Examples: contributing to Roth accounts in low-tax years and to tax-deferred accounts in high-tax years; donating to non-profits in high-tax years; bunching tax deductions; keeping investments with a higher current tax burden in retirement accounts; and using qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) in retirement.

There are many more, and we work to identify strategies that fit each client’s unique situation.

Buy what you need, not what you're sold.

We assist you in determining what types and amounts of insurance you need. Old Peak does not sell insurance products, but we often assist clients in finding and working with brokers who do.

Virtually all our clients will need health, home, and auto insurance. You may also need umbrella liability insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, or long-term care insurance. Employer group plans usually provide some coverage, but often clients need to supplement it.

Because we do not sell insurance, we can provide an unbiased opinion of what you need.

How We'll Work Together:

Evaluate (Are we a fit?)

Create Financial Plan (First 3 months)

This is the busiest part of the process. Here’s what will happen:

Kick-off meeting: we’ll discuss goals and any time-sensitive issues and review the workplan.

Diligence: we’ll provide a list of documents we need to create your financial plan, such as investment statements, most recent tax return, insurance policies and estate planning documents. You’ll upload those to your secure client portal, and we will analyze them with follow-up requests as necessary.

Initial financial plan: We’ll create a plan that covers all critical areas of your financial life: cash flow and goals, investments, tax, estate plan and insurance. We’ll review it with you, adjust as necessary, and agree action steps, for example changes to your savings rate, insurance policies or estate plan.

Investments: We’ll open accounts for you at Schwab and organize transfers of your existing accounts. We’ll analyze your portfolio and prepare an Investment Policy Statement, or IPS, which will guide our investment activities for you going forward. We will make the agreed changes, which may include adjusting your level of risk or switching out funds. We’ll specifically discuss any trades which create a significant taxable gain.

Implement Plan (First year)

We’ll work with you to tackle agreed-on changes to your financial profile, starting with the most time sensitive. Examples:

Investments: The initial changes to your investment portfolio may be implemented quickly, or we may agree to spread them over 2+ calendar years if there is a large tax bill.

Account openings and funding: Often, clients will open and fund new accounts – for example, a SEP IRA if you have self-employment income or Roth IRAs if you or your adult children can contribute to this tax-free vehicle. If you create a trust, we will also help you open new investment accounts for the trust.

Amending or creating new estate planning documents: Your plan comprises of last wills, living trusts, powers of attorney for health care and financial decisions, and potentially irrevocable trusts. We will agree on what you need and liaise with your attorney for changes or help you find an attorney if you wish.

Changes to your insurance coverage: This may involve adding an umbrella liability policy, buying more life or disability insurance, or cancelling unnecessary or overpriced policies.

Ongoing Management (Year 2 & beyond)

There are multiple items we will tackle every year, but – just as important – there are the unexpected issues which arise.

Our regular activities include:

Rebalancing your investments, to keep you at your pre-agreed risk targets

Quarterly investment performance reporting

Agree and execute on company stock plan vesting and trading strategy

Mid-year paycheck review, with a particular focus on retirement plan contributions and tax withholding

Potential tax minimization activities like IRA contributions

Planning for charitable giving or gifts to family members

Assistance with collecting documentation for your tax filing

Annual financial plan update

But we spend just as much time on unexpected issues, whether from stock market volatility, an employment change, a health event, or new major financial goals like a second home or higher expected college spending. We are here to speak when you need us.

No commissions, no sales—just expert financial planning and investment management.

Fees are deducted quarterly from investment accounts, and you can cancel anytime. Clients may also pay fees to third parties such as mutual fund companies, which deduct management fees from their funds, and brokers such as Schwab, which may charge trading commissions or service fees. Old Peak receives none of those fees.

How do I know if Old Peak is the right fit for me?

We’re a good fit for clients seeking long-term, ongoing guidance across all areas of their financial life—not just investments. Most of our clients are busy executives or retirees who want to delegate to a trusted partner. Let’s talk and see if we’re a match.

What’s included in your services?

Could you explain your philosophy on investing?

The most important decision you make is what portion of your portfolio is in stocks (higher risk and anticipated return) vs bonds (lower risk and anticipated return). That decision depends on each person's circumstances. But we believe you should invest in stock and similar higher-risk investments only for your long-term goals – meaning you expect to own these investments at least 10 years. That time horizon will typically allow you to hold through a severe market decline.

Once we mutually determine that mix, we believe in purchasing broadly diversified, low-fee mutual funds and exchange traded funds (ETFs) to provide your exposure to stocks or bonds.

Over long periods, diversification should reduce risk compared to owning only a small number of individual stocks or bonds. Our highest net worth clients often have a slice of their investments in private funds.

Do you prepare taxes?

We do not prepare taxes. Our role is two-fold:

First, we will work with you throughout the year to minimize your lifetime tax bill. Examples include maximizing allowable retirement plan contributions, harvesting tax losses in your investments, determining the best years to make large charitable gifts, structuring charitable giving by using appreciated securities, and taking advantage of low-income years to make Roth conversions.

Second, we'll work closely with your accountant—or help you find one that's a good fit—to plan strategy during the year and to make sure they have all necessary documentation for tax filing after year-end.

Do I have to move my accounts to Schwab?

Almost all our clients have almost all their investment assets under our management at Schwab. The notable exception is your 401(k) or 403(b) with your existing employer. That typically must stay where it is, and we will not manage it unless you want us to.

We can handle transfers of investment accounts from your existing broker to Schwab. The process is smooth, tax-free and can be done within 1-2 weeks.
